A Greek dinner

I went to one of the tavernas in Hora last night, but it wasn’t open until six thirty, so I had a brief wander around. It’s ages since I did so, and I haven’t had time to use my map of Hora to make sure I have stepped on every path in the town. Something to do on a hot day perhaps. It’s not too busy, most of the shops are open now, the ones that sell clothes, tourist stuff and so on. There are a few houses that have chairs on their roofs looking out onto the views, which are amazing.

After my wander, I sat outside the taverna as they were just opening. I said I would wait in Greek. I ordered an Alfa beer, and had a look at the menu. Why not try and have all the conversation with the waitress in Greek? So I ordered a Greek salad and prawns in tomato sauce. I had to look up prawns on google translate. The Greek salad  words are easy actually. I knew the words for another beer, I had to remind myself of them, and again it’s not hard. A UK couple went in and I told them this place is good. I went here with my Sifnos friends last year. A couple of other servers came along, one I know from the Medical centre, another Greek with two jobs. Here is the meal.

At the end I told them the food was good, I knew the words for this from memory, I used the long version, not just the word for tasty. The young server said something back which on reflection, was probably can I take everything away now, oops. Eventually the first server came by and I told her it was good and she asked me in English, could she clear up. Oh well. I went inside for the toilet, and paid up. I really enjoyed myself, with a bit of effort I could make myself understood. I have lost count of the words I know now, it’s irrelevant anyway, it’s using them and trying to pick up more of them as my time here continues. On my wander around Hora before the meal, I spotted this old chest. Unfortunately the writing on it has faded too much to make it out.

The good news is my friend who set up the Dog Palace is getting better, I don’t know when I will be going next week yet. The lady who is looking after my friends cats walked past the taverna when I was eating and asked me if I wanted to meet them and some other folks later on, but I decided two beers was enough and watched an episode of Spooks instead.
