Around the island in a few hours

Friday had me having a longer visit to the Coffee Shop. It had been raining, not auspicious for my laundry day, oh well, after rain comes good weather they say. The place was quite busy, I was keen to do more Greek if I could muster up the courage.. Marinos sat next to me and I showed him the Apricots at the Dog Palace, I managed to tell him where they were. I then also managed to ask if he had any, and yes he did. Then I decided to see what Google Translate made of the sentence “can we go and look at your garden one day”. There was only one word in the resulting sentence that I did not know. So I tried it. He pointed in the air and I think he said the word rain. So rain put paid to that idea for today then. He then asked me what I was going to do, I did say I was going to Livadi, then said the Greek word for nothing. I must remember when they say things,  that I can’t decider to say the Greek word for understand, and before it put the negative word, which is ‘then’, in other words I don’t understand. It’s so easy, it’s just practice and remembering to use the words I know.

Here is a ruined building on todays drive.

A few things to do in Livadi, ferry tickets to go to Sifnos in May, to do some gardening work and see my friends there, then pick up a second suitcase to store, things when I go away for the summer. I also popped in to the new house, measured the beds and took some non blurry photos.  After Livadi, I drove around the island to the beach Avessalos, I have been there before. I made a quick visit to this church overlooking the beach, Panagia Vounou on the way.

The road down to the beach is being renovated. In truth this is just carving rock and soil off the face of the ground at the side of the road and flattening it out, making the road wider and improving the surface. Unfortunately unless they concrete it over, a good rain will wash the soil away and leave a very rocky mess behind it. The road is wide enough for a carriageway extension to the M25, the road through Livadakia and Rammos is not this wide, but with buildings either side, there is not much they can do about that. At the beach I sat down, but it wasn’t warm and every so often this powerful squall came in and nearly blew me over.

I have said this before this island is a geological masterpiece. On this beach are some amazing Green rocks with almost icing sugar layers through it.

I did a bit of litterpicking while on the beach, using two old cat food bags. I found a life jacket, one wonders what caused it to be on the beach, did it fail in its primary function or was it just discarded as it wasn’t seen to be needed? As I was leaving, it tried to rain, but back in Hora my washing was dry and it was time to put out the next batch.
