House hunting
Thursday 30th March 2023
Todays post is late because I have been at the Dog Palace today, as I will tomorrow. I don’t have much time at the Coffee Shop, because of this.
Todays post is about House Hunting, in respect to finding places for all year rent, or ten months, as my current lease runs. I am not unhappy in my current abode, but I made the mistake of not negotiating after deciding I liked it. So I am paying to higher price, plus the extra of electric and internet bills. I will be disappointed if the landlord decides he wants even more. I found this place using an estate agent, most rental properties are found using AirBnb, and are only available in the summer months. While I am away, I imagine my landlord will get good money per day on this property, given it can easily house a family of four. There is a serious lack of rental accommodation on the island, so supply and demand, means high prices. Seasonal workers expect to have accommodation thrown in their employee contracts, as otherwise they could not come here and work.
I will try the Estate Agents, but I expect most of the places they will have will be the sort of price or more than what I am currently paying. Marinos told me and one of my friends of a place for rent, much cheaper than here. I took a look at it the other day, it is very small and old fashioned, nothing wrong with that, but it’s not very cosy. There is no settee, just a second single bed to sit on. My bathroom is very nice, and I have a proper shower cubicle. Traditional houses here would have what we would call a wet room, the shower in the corner of the bathroom, which might not be any bigger than a broom cupboard, in the UK!
There is another option, a house near another friends place. It’s like my friends place, three stories and a huge terrace looking over Livadi. It has a fireplace, kitchen and bathroom and looked good. The only problem is the Dutch family will be coming over at indeterminate times during the year, my friend has said I could stay in her annex her daughter uses, when they do, which is very kind. The idea is I could help maintain the property, while they are away. I am waiting to see if the family agree to this. The downside is I would be halfway up the mountain, so no quick walk to supermarkets or Marinos! Worst case is I come back here for another year.
