Sunrise and on my way home
Wednesday 19th October Syros and Serifos
I thought it would be nice to write a bit more about the shop owner that I bought the guitar from. His name is Lefteris, he is seventy seven and has run that shop for fifty years. He is one of those people who I think when he has gone, won’t be replaced, but you could argue he is irreplaceable ! In the UK he would be called an eccentric, and those sorts of people aren’t appearing, people conform, which makes society duller I think. I have actually bought Lefteris’s guitar. He sort of takes one out of his new stock, plays it for a few months, then sells its cheaper to a customer. He kept joking about it. One thing I was worried about, was tuning it. No matter. He has this thing that fits on the head of the guitar, and you pluck a string, when it’s in tune a green led shines. It works through vibration not sound. How it works out what vibration, relates to what string and so on, I have no idea. Lefteris plays in a group and at the theatre in Syros. He writes songs, he had a pile of little pieces of paper with them some of them on. This was just a few months work he said. The others, heaven knows where they are. He is a bit like me, not bothered in politics, we just let that side of the world, just get on with it. It’s not giving up, it’s just something I don’t want to get tangled up in. Here is a bit of his shop front.
After taking the guitar back to the room, I went to the nice taverna on the harbour front with the picture of the lady owner from years ago on its front cover. I had sardines with a Greek salad. Near the end of the meal a couple walked past me. I recognised them from my outward voyage. He said, so you are stranded here too huh? They were Americans. They were meant to go to Mykonos but had to cancel that. They were actually chartering a plane to take them to Athens as they HAD to get the US plane back. They must have a lot of money and have important jobs! I hope they make it.
Footnote. Oh wow. I appear to have lucked in. I was looking outside and there is Serifos. Odd, we are meant to visit Paros first. But no Wednesdays schedule visits, Serifos, then Sifnos and so on. So I will be in time for my haircut after all. All I need now is some Greek words to make sure she takes a centimetre off and not leave it a centimetre long!

Really interesting about the guitar tuner! I have an unused guitar because had plans to learn but it needs a tuning. I will look the tuners up! Thanks.
