Sleepy Sunday

22nd October (evening) and 23rd October (morning) - Hora

So I had my spaghetti Carbonara last night, half an onion, mushrooms and bacon, fried off, spaghetti boiled to just al dente, mix it all together, pour the egg in and stir in until the egg is warmed through, not so it’s like scrambled egg. Oh don’t forget pepper, and a pinch of salt.

As I walked down to Vasileas bar last night, I reflected on the reduced number of lights on in buildings in Hora and Livadi. It doesn’t make a lot of difference to the night sky up here, it’s was always amazing, I was treated to a rich tapestry of stars when I walked back. Meanwhile when I walked in the bar, the lady who, I thought was called Anna was there. When the guy who was sitting next to her left, I asked if I could sit next to her. It did not take long to realise she can’t speak much English! I know she works in some kind of property management, as I have seen her wizzing around in a van with something that alludes to that in its side. So it’s a get the phone out and try and have a conversation! It was very tough and I don’t know how enjoyable it was for her, but when I left she said thank you, so there you go. I am not looking for relationships of that kind, but someone who is in the bar, I can sit and talk to, even if it’s with a phone. Like a lot of people here, both young and old she smokes. I still think she looks like Dusty Springfield.

This photo was taken when it was almost dusk but the phone makes it look like it’s daylight. To the right of the sails, you can see Venus I think.

Back to the bar, Vasileas clearly does not like cats! Several were trying to get in the bar, and he threw a plastic bottle at them to keep them out. There isn’t much to  eat in the bar, do cats like peanuts? So the lady’s name is actually Evangelia, but I think the pronunciation is not as we would expect. She lives in Pano Hora, but unlike me, in the bit on the mountain. She was drinking some Raki that Vasileas makes, it has honey in it. He heats it up, before he puts it in a little bottle, then he serves it. I told him I had bought a guitar, he says he can play a bit. I said we should set up a band. I think I should get him a water pistol, a bit kinder than throwing bottles at the cats! Later on Elena turned up and sat with Vasileas.

In the morning, I decided it was time to wash the bed sheets and as the wind has dropped, try out my washing line contraption. I haven’t decided on the bed situation, although I am leaning to the double bed, as it’s dark in the mornings and use it with the duvet. What I find is I am warm when I go to bed  then later on  I wake up cold, so I throw the blanket on. I am hoping this rigmarole will be easier on a bigger bed and a duvet! Here is a photo of my washing line, it all gets taken down when everything is done. The canes I got are on the left.  The pillowcases, for those worried that I was not washing my them, they were sunning themselves on the washing line downstairs.

I am very pleased that the onions and garlic are coming up nicely, they are in the most sheltered part of the roof area and in the sun as well. Behind them is a four foot wall and on the left  side the barbecue. These  protect the troughs from the direction the wind usually comes from. When I was putting the washing out! I could hear the singing in the nearby church.

For the rest of the day, I am cleaning the house, keeping an eye on the washing and having a chat with our other neighbours in Twyford. I will be doing some Greek and Guitar and having a walk of some description. It is going to be mid twenties for the next few days, before dropping back to twenty at the end of next week.
