Greeks bearing gifts

Hora and Livadi Thursday 15th morning

Before walking down to Livadi I went to the supermarket here in Hora and bought a few more provisions. Here is a photo of a bit of the bakery where I am going one evening to watch bread being made. The oven burns wood.

So on the walk down to Livadi there are several churches you go past but one is quite unique, in that it’s like the houses, it’s a real sugar cube building. I have seen somewhere that  Serifos is called Iron island, from the fact iron ore used to extracted until the 1960’s.

About half way down I met a lady called Pauline who was walking up,  very impressive! She was here for several days, and is going to other islands I know. We had a lovely chat and I wished her well. I saw an advert for a guitar concert, with a guy playing music from various genres, unfortunately it was in August. That might have been the concert that I was asked to be a steward in. ( I have joined a Serifos volunteer group)

Yesterday I did not mention that a dog themed drinks bottle that was given to me from a family whose dog I have cared for went missing. I carried it on the walk, and I was sure that I put it down and forgot to pick it up at the bakery or supermarket in Livadi that I use. I have a photo of it and I showed it to the lady in the supermarket first. No luck. I then tried the bakery where two young girls work. I showed it to the first, who I now know is called Flora. No she had not seen it. Then to the second girl, Katerina which is a very popular name for a girl in Greece. Success, she had seen it! However she had moved it outside and it had disappeared, but hang on, she had another idea. She came back with it in her hand, it being a bit filthy. It had been tossed into the nearest bin. She went to the sink, and proceeded to scrub it clean, within an inch of it life. I was so grateful. From now on, I will use a regular plastic bottle, I don’t want to loose the dog one.

I then walked to the two beaches on the other side of Livadi, the second where I burnt myself badly last time. Here there seemed several people bathing and sunning themselves as I did, I hope they are being careful! The second beach was very quiet still, the first being quite busy. I must go back with my towel and Speedo’s and have a dip, before the water starts cooling down. I retraced my steps and visited the church and graveyard that overlooks the sea. What better place to be laid to rest?

I bought my ice cream and while eating it, a cat slinked by with a fish in its mouth. The fish was very small, maybe a fisherman gave it to the cat. It found a nice shady place to consume its tasty dish.

Footnote. I have just been told that a coconut cream is not like coconut milk at all! It’s often used in desserts!
