Music night

Sunday 6th November

I went down to Vasileas bar last night. It was clear something was afoot. There was a sound system and musical instruments lying about. Are you playing I asked  him. No, but he pointed out two people who were. One looked like the bus driver. The instruments were a six stringed guitar, like mine and the other a bouzouki. They did a sound check and then left to sit outside. The place started to fill up, with many people that I knew. Once the music started the bar was full, so people had to sit outside. Everyone joined in with the singing. The guitar provided the rhythm and the bouzouki the lead. The fingers on the bouzouki were amazingly fast. Reminded me of Jools Holland playing the piano. Everyone seemed so happy to be joining in the event, it’s a long time since I have been to a music event, but it was very special. It was interesting to watch a couple and their friends drinking Jamesons whisky. I think it had a one shot thing in the bottle, so when you poured it you got one shot. But it was like an honesty thing. I imagine Vasileas just asked them when they left, how many shots they had had. He does this with my beers. I think I left sometime after eleven but I am not sure!

When I got to the house, and I opened the door, after fitting the key to the electric on switch,  nothing happened. No power. That’s odd I thought. So I put my phone torch on and checked the fuse board. No lights, nothing. This was before the overnight storm! I found my torch, but after a few seconds it went dead. Luckily I had a spare set of batteries. I brushed my teeth and went to bed.

Overnight I heard heavy rain, thunder and wind. There was no power in the morning, so I got up checked the meter outside, also dead, and sent a text to the landlord. He came by, it seems a lot of the village is out. Maybe the music stopped soon after I left?

It’s just a matter of waiting now, I can do my Greek, guitar and clean the house. I got some lunch in last night, in case I was going to be stuck in the house. As long as the battery in the little Vodaphone router keep going I can use that, or turn on the hotspot on the phone. It’s certainly been interesting, as usual this island brought to me two surprises, the music and the electric cut!

Footnote. I just saw the landlord in Livadi. The power is back on!
